Optimal Bone & Joint Health for Midlife Women & Beyond
As a Master Somatic Movement Educator and Therapist, Alan Herdman-trained remedial specialist Comprehensive Pilates teacher, and UK Faculty for Buff Bones®, my work harnesses the power of Pilates, Somatic Movement Education, and Somatic Movement Therapy to deliver sessions tailored specifically to women in midlife and beyond.
Together, we develop greater physical strength in our bodies, resilience in our minds, and inner confidence to move through the world with grace, freedom, and strength.
By integrating medically-endorsed movement strategies from my Buff Bones® training with my whole-person Somatic Pilates approach, we go far beyond standard exercise. We address the total person - including the fear of falling, joint discomfort, and stress. My work is empowering and designed to bring you right back home to yourself - the total person who can enjoy movement once more.
I am the UK Faculty for Buff Bones® led by its creator, Rebekah Rotstein, having trained in the system and worked with it for over 9 years with my own clinets. Alongside working with my private clients, I help train and tutor instructors taking the Buff Bones® Instructor training within the United Kingdom and internationally for more than 20 training series.

The Discovery Call
“I have been working with Sarah since being diagnosed with osteoporosis. Sarah has been able to ease my associated fear of movement, especially falling. Over time Sarah has been extremely helpful in increasing my overall strength and fitness in several areas where the impact of osteoporosis may be most severe in the future. This includes identifying the causes of my back pain and teaching me her specialist programming. Sarah is an excellent and kind teacher and her attention to detail continues to be of great benefit in my day to day life and gives me both motivation and hope for the future.”
Myself, sitting with the creator of Buff Bones®, Rebekah Rotstein, following the 2024 annual instructor training at Polestar Pilates UK in London where I worked with her to train the London Instructors.

Why Specialised Bone & Joint Health Matters
In the UK 1 in 2 women and over the age of 50 will break a bone due to low bone density and 3 million are estimated to have osteoporosis (Source, NOS). But exercise has so many positive aspects to your life and it is recommended that you do exercise! But how to exercise not only safely but effectively? Is your movement system really addressing the needs that you have?
Targeted exercise is essential for building muscle strength, protecting bone mass, and improving balance - but how you exercise matters.
My work integrates my Specialist Somatic Pilates, with Somatic Movement and practices from Somatic Therapy as well as Buff Bones® trained bone-strengthening techniques.
According to the International Osteoporosis Foundation, exercise is one of the most essential strategies for building and maintaining strong bones and preventing falls and fractures: “Targeted exercise is especially important in that it helps to build muscle strength, improve balance and posture, and maintain bone mass.”
My programming is a unique blend of movement, breath and mindset that offers a system for the whole person.
Safe loading without compromising vulnerable joint structures or putting the spine or other joints at risk
Stress reduction skills and techniques from the wellbeing toolkit of somatic therapy to help you develop greater confidence in you.
Balance training using enhanced somatic movement education programming of the proprioceptive, vestibular and visual system
Nervous system regulation skills using somatic breathwork to calm stressors in the nervous system down.
What I want for you is to enjoy moving, and have a deep respect and positive relationship with your body for what it can do and achieve.
Support your bones and joints for life, and prepare your body for other loading activities such as weight training to ensure you are not loading your bones incorrectly or becoming more vulnerable to injury. This becomes even more important if you have any other conditions that will also need consideration. If this is the case you need a teacher qualified and experienced working with multiple conditions, and in some cases, working hand in hand with medical professionals.

Intelligent Strength: Somatics & Biotensegrity for Bone and Joint Health
My approach to movement is deeply somatic, drawing directly from my background as a Master Somatic Movement Educator and Therapist
Strength training is essential as we age, but strength without felt sense (proprioception) is incomplete. Our brain and nervous system - the body's central command centre - must be able to coordinate movement efficiently. With no felt sense or heightened stress it is incredibly challenging to achieve this. Without proper somatic sensory control, loading an unaligned body with weights can lead to strain or injury. Sadly I am working with an increasing number of clients coming to me with a weights background and injury.
To prevent this, my work integrates somatics and helps guide you into felt sense and feeling what you are doing and how you are working.
Additionally the principles of Biotensegrity - a modern biomechanical model that views the body as a continuous network of tension and compression across muscles, bones, fascia, and ligaments are used within this work and is a feature of the Buff Bones® training.
Think of your body as being a network of bone, muscle and fascia all of which is interrelated. What happens in one part of the body can globally impact either negatively or positive across the whole structure of you. My role is to help you have greater integrity within your own structure, using Pilates and Somatic Movement to work on areas in your body that need support as well as pull tension that is unhealthy out of your body. Tension and stress can cause high levels of disruption within our body. Sometimes we are training ourselves into a high tension that can be unhealthy. By drawing on advanced bone health protocols including my training and UK faculty work with Buff Bones® protocols we learn to leverage ground reaction forces and fascial tension. By using my expertise in somatics we learn the felt difference between moving from unhealthy tension and a disembodied place into working with our body is harmony and health. Moving in an embodied way, creating balance, structural integrity, and confidence in every movement.

General group classes are designed for uninjured, general populations and do not address the specific loading needs or safety precautions required for osteoporosis. Specialized sessions focus on targeted bone loading, multi-directional balance, and fascial hydration tailored specifically to midlife and osteoporotic bodies.
-
Standard Pilates classes often include forward spinal flexion (crunches, rolling like a ball) and extreme twisting, which can put osteoporotic spines at risk. My specialised bone health sessions modify traditional Pilates to avoid movements that do not service this condition well and in some cases can be contraindicated, focusing instead on spinal extension, hip alignment, dynamic balance, and safe weight-bearing.

Sarah is both a Master Somatic Movement Educator and UK Faculty for Buff Bones®. This unique combination means your sessions go beyond simple exercise: you receive medically-informed, evidence-based bone loading paired with nervous system regulation to eliminate the fear of movement and build confidence safely.
-
Falls are the primary cause of osteoporotic fractures. Static balance (standing on one leg) is a starting point, but stumbles happen while moving. I train dynamic, multi-directional balance at varied speeds so your brain and nervous system can react instinctively to prevent falls in daily life. I also include training of all 3 balance systems: proprioception, visual and auditory.
-
Estrogen decline during menopause affects bone density, joint lubrication, and connective tissue elasticity. Incorporating somatic movement and fascial hydration techniques helps ease joint stiffness, regulate the nervous system, and prepare the body for safe strength training without triggering flare-ups or injuries.
